The safeguard fires in under 5% of sessions, tuned conservatively enough that it admits to catching harmless requests. That’s not a content filter. That’s a capability-gated router shipped as a safety control.
This is the pattern I keep watching become the actual infrastructure in production AI: the model you call is rarely the model that answers. A new flagship doesn’t just raise the ceiling — it changes what you put behind the router and what you fall back to when a request trips a guardrail. Accepting false positives to ship faster is the same latency-versus-safety trade every team running guardrails makes, just stated out loud. The detail that the lead grows with task length matters too: for long-horizon agentic work, the gap between flagship and fallback is widest exactly where a silent downgrade is hardest to notice.
Which raises the uncomfortable question for anyone building on top: if your provider can reroute a fraction of calls to a weaker model, your eval harness needs to measure the served response, not the model you think you invoked. The HN discussion is mostly arguing about Mythos and cyber capabilities, but the part I’d watch is the routing. When the safeguard is a model swap, “which model am I actually running?” stops being a config question and becomes an observability one.
