The interesting claim in vLLM’s Micro-Agent writeup isn’t that small models can beat frontier ones — it’s where the collaboration happens. They push it down into the serving layer, behind a single model-API call, instead of asking every application to hand-build an agent graph.
That reframing matters for anyone running production AI. Today the orchestration logic — when to escalate to a bigger model, when to fan out parallel attempts, when to stop — lives in application code, duplicated across teams and frozen at deploy time. Moving it into the router turns “pick the right model” into “construct the right capability per request”: confidence-gated escalation so you only spend a frontier call on the hard cases, parallel rating under a hard token cap, role-based loops bounded by a budget.
I’ve watched the cost side of this play out. The expensive part of an agent isn’t the model — it’s the unbounded scaffold around it: retries with no ceiling, fan-out with no quality gate, escalation policy buried in prompt glue. A router that makes the budget a first-class contract is solving the operational problem, not just the benchmark one. The scorecard proves the loops work; the real story is that capability becomes a serving-layer concern with an SLA attached.
The open question is ownership. If the router becomes the place where collaboration, safety routing, and latency budgets all live, it stops being infrastructure and becomes the most important piece of your agent stack — and the hardest to reason about when it misbehaves.
